Total Bases
TBThe sum of bases gained on hits: one for a single, two for a double, three for a triple, four for a home run.
Total bases counts only bases earned by the hit itself. A single is one, a double two, a triple three, a home run four.
Bases reached any other way are excluded. A walk, a hit by pitch, a stolen base, or an advance on an error all add nothing to total bases, because the statistic is measuring the batted ball rather than the baserunning.
Its main use is as the numerator of slugging percentage, though it also appears on its own as a plain measure of offensive production over a season.
Do walks count toward total bases?
No. Total bases counts only bases gained on hits. Walks, hit-by-pitches, stolen bases, and advances on errors are all excluded.
