60 minutes · 10U · Indoor

3 stations, 4 players at each, rotating every 11 minutes on a whistle.

0:00–0:088 min

Movement warm-up

Whole group

General athleticism

Skips, lunges, crawls, change of direction. This is training, not a formality — it is the general athletic work that has nowhere else to live once games start. Light throwing progression if arms are in season.

Needs: Open space

0:08–0:1911 min

Hitting — tee and front toss

Whole group

Swing mechanics, contact quality

Two players working at once — one hitting, one feeding — swapping every ten swings so nobody stands. Tee first, front toss once the swing holds up.

Needs: A net, or a fence and a bucket of balls

0:19–0:3011 min

Infield — short hops and footwork

Whole group

First step, glove position, hands

Every player has a ball. Short hops against a wall, then footwork patterns. Watch whether they field through the ball or wait for it.

Needs: A wall, or a coach and a bucket

0:30–0:4111 min

Throwing mechanics

Whole group

Arm action, accuracy to a target

Short distance, low effort, accuracy over velocity. Tape a target on the wall. If arms are mid-season this can be partner throwing instead.

Needs: A wall or a partner, plus a target

Why they come back

One short game with a winner. Anything with a score. They remember the last ten minutes, and this is most of what keeps a winter roster together.

Needs: Nothing

Keep the clock. A station that runs long steals from the one after it, every time — and the measure of a good practice is how many players are moving at any given moment.

Why stations

The failure mode of youth practice is a queue. One player fields a grounder, eleven watch, and everyone goes home having taken four repetitions in an hour. It looks like practice because a coach is talking and a ball is being hit.

Stations fix the arithmetic. Three groups of four rotating every twelve minutes gives each player roughly four times the repetitions of a whole-team drill, and it has the side effect of preventing most behaviour problems, which are usually boredom.

They also solve the coaching problem. A volunteer parent who has never played can run a tee station perfectly well given one instruction and twelve minutes — which is a far better ask than “can you help with practice”.

Questions

How do you plan a youth baseball practice?

Use stations on a hard clock rather than a whole-team drill. A typical hour is ten minutes of movement warm-up, three or four stations of about twelve minutes rotating on a whistle, and a short competitive finish. The measure of a good practice is how many players are moving at any moment.

How many stations should a baseball practice have?

As many as you have adults to supervise, up to about four. An unsupervised station at youth ages stops working within a few minutes, so the number of adults, not the number of drills, is the real constraint.

What can you practise indoors without a field?

Tee and front toss into a net, short hops and footwork against a wall, throwing mechanics to a taped target, catching and receiving work, and whole-group situational walkthroughs. All of them need a wall or a net rather than space.

How long should a youth baseball practice be?

About 60 to 90 minutes for most youth ages, and shorter at 8U where attention rather than ability is the limit. Ending on time matters more than fitting in another drill.

What do you cut when practice runs short?

The situational block. It is the one that works perfectly well outdoors once the season starts. Protect the warm-up, which is athletic training in itself, and the competitive finish, which is what makes players want to come back.

Is this practice plan generator free?

Yes, and there is no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
