The conventional youth baseball tiebreaker order is head-to-head result, then fewest runs allowed, then run differential with a per-game cap, then runs scored, then a coin flip. What matters more than the order is publishing it before the tournament starts.

Tiebreakers are the least interesting part of running a tournament and the part most likely to produce a genuinely bad afternoon. Two teams finish 2-1, one advances, and the decision is either mechanical or it is an argument.

The standard order

This sequence is widely used across youth baseball and is defensible on its merits: it starts with the most direct evidence and only falls back to aggregate measures when direct evidence does not exist.

1. Head to head
If the tied teams played each other, that result settles it. This breaks down with three-way ties where the teams did not all play, in which case skip to the next criterion rather than trying to construct a mini-standings.
2. Fewest runs allowed
Placed above run differential deliberately. It rewards defense and, crucially, it cannot be manipulated by running up a score.
3. Run differential, capped
Runs scored minus runs allowed, with each game's margin capped at a set number, commonly 8 or 10.
4. Most runs scored
Also subject to the cap.
5. Coin flip
Have one. An unresolved tie is worse than an arbitrary one.

Why the cap is not optional

An uncapped run differential tiebreaker is an instruction to coaches to beat a weak team by as much as possible. That is how you get a 24-2 game in a 10U pool, with a coach stealing bases up nineteen runs because the standings reward it.

Capping the per-game margin at 8 or 10 removes the incentive completely. Winning by 10 and winning by 24 count identically, so the rational move is to empty the bench, which is also what you want to happen.

State the cap in the rules packet in the same sentence as the tiebreaker. A cap nobody knew about is a cap that did not prevent anything.

Seeding the bracket once ties are broken

Standard practice is to seed across pools rather than within them: the best pool winner is the one seed regardless of which pool they came from, and the bracket is arranged so the one seed meets the lowest advancing seed.

Where you have the flexibility, avoid a first bracket game between two teams from the same pool. They just played, and a rematch as the opening bracket game is the least interesting game you could schedule.

Publishing them so they hold

Put the ordered list in the rules packet, in the pre-tournament email, and on the public event page. Three places, identical wording.

When you apply them, show the arithmetic. A team that is eliminated on runs allowed will accept it far more readily if they can see the two numbers side by side than if they are told a committee decided.

Common questions

What is the most common tiebreaker in youth baseball?
Head-to-head result, when the tied teams played each other. When they did not, or when three teams are tied, fewest runs allowed is the most common next criterion because it rewards defense and cannot be inflated by running up scores.
Should run differential be capped?
Yes. Without a cap, the standings actively reward beating a weak team by as much as possible. Capping each game's margin at 8 or 10 runs removes the incentive entirely while still separating teams that won comfortably from teams that squeaked through.
How do you break a three-way tie in pool play?
Head-to-head usually cannot resolve it, so skip to the next criterion and apply it to all three teams at once rather than eliminating them pairwise. Applying pairwise produces different answers depending on the order you compare, which is exactly the argument you are trying to avoid.
